2023 Land Gap Report update

Our 2023 update to the Land Gap Report indicates that pledges by a small number of high-emitting, high-income nations account for over 85 per cent of total land required to deliver climate targets submitted to the UNFCCC.

We worked with the team behind the 2022 Land Gap Report to deliver this update, including reviewing the estimates of the land required to deliver land-based carbon dioxide removal in 197 countries’ NDCs and long-term strategies pledged to the UNFCCC, including 40 new submissions made in the last year. It is essential to phase-out of fossil fuels and ensure countries do not over-rely on land-based removals to offset continuing fossil fuel and industrial emissions, if the world is to stay below 1.5 degrees of warming.
