Webinar 29 April 2026 - An updated global warming outlook: progress and perspectives from India

This webinar provided an updated assessment of global temperature outcomes based on the latest set of NDCs, alongside perspectives on how NDCs are evolving and a deep dive on climate progress and perspectives from India.

The discussion:

  • Presented updated global emissions coverage and temperature projections
    • Dr Alister Self, Senior Analyst, Climate Resource
  • Shared reflections on how NDCs are evolving globally
    • Kimberly Todd, Global Advisor - Climate and Forests, United Nations Development Programme - UNDP
  • Discussed implementation dynamics and sectoral realities in India
    • Dr Ritu Mathur, Director, Centre for Energy Modelling and Assessment, TERI
    • Dr Manish Kumar Shrivastava, Associate Director, Earth Science and Climate Change Division, TERI

The session was a dialogue bringing together global analysis and in-country perspectives, with a focus on understanding how climate pathways are shaped in practice.

Key insights from the discussion

  • Climate Resource - what current targets add up to globally: With NDCs now covering the majority of global emissions, we have a clearer picture of likely temperature outcomes. Current projections suggest warming is now just below 2°C, which is a notable shift from pre-Paris trajectories, but still above long-term climate goals, highlighting the remaining ambition and implementation gap.
  • United Nations Development Programme - how NDCs are evolving: The latest generation of NDCs shows improvements in scope, detail and sectoral coverage, but also increasing diversity in approaches. The discussion highlighted the growing importance of implementation frameworks, finance, and institutional capacity in determining whether targets translate into real-world outcomes.
  • TERI - how climate pathways are shaped in practice (India perspective): India’s experience underscores the central role of development context in shaping climate action. The discussion highlighted how decarbonisation is being navigated alongside economic growth, sectoral transitions and institutional realities, reinforcing that global outcomes depend on how policies are implemented on the ground.
