A COP28 agreement to phase-out fossil fuel emissions is pivotal to the 1.5°C goal

Climate Resource released its 2023 update of projected warming if countries meet their NDC and long-term targets, and a comparison of those projections to recent assessments by UNEP, UNFCCC, the IEA and others.

Warming implied by countries’ targets is still ‘just below’ 2°C if all are met on time and in full - little changed in the last 12 months, and broadly similar to assessments by others that are based on similar criteria.

With the stagnating progress towards stronger targets in the last year, what is critical now are firm commitments and action to triple renewable energy and double the rate of energy efficiency by 2030, and phase-out fossil fuels. Phase-out of coal that delivers at least a 90% reduction by 2035, would play a pivotal role in getting the world back to a 1.5°C aligned pathway.
